Grimston Parish Council with supporting grants from Norfolk County Council has purchased two mobile Speed Activated Signs (SAM2) with the aim of reminding drivers to keep within the speed limit in those areas where residents have reported issues with speeding vehicles. The SAM2 is a vehicle-activated sign that displays the speed of an approaching vehicle. The unit also records the volume of vehicles and the speeds at which they are travelling. This data is then reviewed, when there is an excess of speeding vehicles the information is passed to the Police for further action.
Pedestrians stand a much better chance of survival if your speed is lower.
-at 40 mph there is a 90 percent chance they will be killed.
-at 35 mph there is a 50 percent chance they will be killed.
-at 30 mph there is a 20 percent chance they will be killed.
-at 20 mph there is a 2.5 percent chance they will be killed.
The SAM2 is deployed at sites that have been approved by Norfolk County Council. The unit can be at one site for up to 4 weeks but must not return to that site within 8 weeks. The movement of the sign ensures that regular drivers do not become over-familiar with the warning. The Parish Council has a small team of volunteers who safely move the sign from each location.
